History
Thaksin university began as a College of Education in a program to expand Colleges of Education throughout the Kingdom. It was established as College of Education, Songkhla on October 1,1968. On June 29,1974 the status of College of Education, Songkhla was upgraded to become a regional campus of Srinakharinwirot University called ‘Srinakharinwirot University,Songkhla’ and commenced a four-year degree program, over time they steadily expanded the programmes offered.

The University realizes their responsibility to develop human resources who can aid line with country development.Because the Songkhla Campus occupied too little land (142 rai or 56 acres) ,the University laid out a project to expand to a new campus in Phattalung with the purpose of following a development plan and so new faculties could be established in the future. Later the name of the University was changed to ‘Srinakharinwirot University-Southern Campus’. In order to continue the natural development and effective management of the University , Srinakharinwirot University-Southern Campus became an independent university named ‘Thaksin University’ on November 1, 1996

Thaksin university is the juristic body under the responsibility of the Office of the Higher Education Commission.Currently, Associate Professor Doctor Somkiat Saithanoo hold the position of University President.

1. recognize ethical, energetic learning and be driven to search for new knowledge on their own.
2. initiate and conduct innovative research and develop projects continuously.
3. communicate and define by opining, journal publishing and presenting of academic conferences.
4. understand, analyse, criticise and apply knowledge based on practical and reasonable experiences

Vision
Thaksin University strives to be the center of learning and a source of knowledge in local social wisdom and culture especially in relation to southern Thailand and to develop expertise particularly in the fields of social sciences, natural science, and technology to a high international standard.

Mission
Thaksin University strives to develop human resources to posses knowledge, virtues and morality.It promotes the quality of life and economic capability to wisely manage resources and to foster a sustainable environment through the application of education and research and academic knowledge thereby strengthening the quality of Thai society, as a society of wisdom and knowledge.

Oblective
Thaksin University strives to be the center of learning and a source of knowledge in local social wisdom and culture especially in relation to southern Thailand and to develop expertise particularly in the fields of social sciences, natural science, and technology to a high international standard.

Location
At present, Thaksin University composes of 2 campuses :

Songkhla Campus has two sites:
The Songkhla Campus situated at 140, Moo 4 , Tambon Khoa-Roob-Chang, Muang District, Songkhla Province occupies an area of 142 rai or 56 acres and the other site at Baan Ao Sai, Koh Yoh, Muang District, Songkhla Province on a 24 rai or 9.5 acres where the Institute for Southern Thai Studies is located.

The Phattalung campus has two operational sites, one at Tambon Ban Plao. Pa Payom District occupying an area of about 3,500 rai (approx. 1,400 acres) and the other at Tambon Phanangtung, Khuan Khanun District on 1,500 rai (approx. 600 acres)

Prince of Songkla University

Prince of Songkla University
university move to a permanent location in the southern city of Pattani. In 1971 a secondcampus was established in Hat Yai.
The university's first ten years of development were characterized by a steady expansion of it's academic disciplines. Also during this time the importance of maintaining high academic standards was instilled into the minds of the university faculty. In subsequent years,the university played an increasing role in providing academic services to the surrounding community. In addition the diversification of academic disciplines occurred in response to the changing needs of the region and the country. Most recently,the university has increased its research output as well as the number of academic services which are offered to the local community. The university's capability to assist in the country's economic and social development,especially in the southern region, has been recently strengthened by the establishment of several support units.
A chronological history of the academic development of Prince of Songkla University is summarized below :

- Enrollment of students into the Faculty of Science and Technology

- Enrollment of students for Continuing Education Programs in Nursing Science, (1- and 2- year programs)

- College of Islamic Studies

1990
- Enrollment of students into the Program of Educational Extension, Surat Thani Province

1991
- Enrollment of students into the Program of Educational Extension, Trang Province

1993
- Establishment of Faculty of Environmental Management
- Establishment of Phuket and Surat Thani Campuses

1994
- Enrollment of students into the Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management at Phuket Campus
- Establishment of the Faculty of Agro-Industry (previously under the Faculty of Natural Resource)

1995
- Enrollment of Ph.D students in Biochemistry

1996
- Development Educational Extension, Trang Provice to be the Information Technology Campus by using tele-conferencing system

1997
- Establishment of Faculty of Liberal Arts

1999
- Enrollment of students into the Program of Bioproduction at Surat Thani Campus

2000
- Rename the Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management (Establishment Project) to be the Faculty of Service Industries (Establishment Project) at Phuket Campus
- Establishment of Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts (Establishment Project) at Pattani Campus
- Establishment of the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Cultural Studies at Pattani Campus

2001
- Masters degree program in Social Development introduced at Phuket Campus
