Dhurakij Pundit University

Dhurakij Pundit University (DPU), which in Thai means University of Business Knowledge , is one of the most distinguished, private universities in Thailand , increasingly recognized by the international academic community. It was established in 1968 as a simple business college, with some 40 students, by its two founders, Dr. Sawai Sudhipitak and Mr. Sanan Ketudat.

From a small beginning, Dhurakij Pundit College grew rapidly in student numbers and academic programs. DPU owes its success mainly to the vision and dedication of Dr. Sawai who served as the University's first president until his death in 1994 and Khun Sanan who guided its expansion as Honorary Chairman of the University Council while pursuing a distinguished career in Government followed by private law practice.

In 1984, the country's Ministry of University Affairs conferred University status on DPU, in recognition of its high academic standards and achievements. Only three other private colleges earned a similar distinction at that time.

Mission and Philosophy
Dhurakij Pundit University aims to nurture academic excellence as Thailand 's premier business-knowledge-enhanced place of learning, providing business know-how for graduates in all disciplines. Every student is a potential leader and it is DPU's responsibility to provide them with opportunities and facilities to develop their knowledge and skills.

DPU's two co-founders believed strongly that having an adequate knowledge of business was essential to achieving success in life. Their faith was expressed in these two statements which serve as the University's philosophy: 'Work Purifies The Soul' and 'Business Professionals Build A Nation'. The sentiments contained in these statements continue to underpin the objectives of Dhurakij Pundit University where every student is taught business knowledge irrespective of the course of study chosen. DPU is also committed to the social and cultural development of its students, placing great importance on the virtues of righteousness and integrity.

Facilities
DPU is well equipped with the most sophisticated and cutting edge equipment, providing excellent student facilities and services.

Campus Facilities and Amenities
Visitors to DPU carry back with them a lasting impression of its tranquil atmosphere. The campus is a “university within a park”, resplendent with trees, plants and flowers creating an environment conducive to learning. Planning of buildings and other facilities and amenities have taken account of the needs of students, lecturers, administrative and support staff and visitors. All enclosed areas like classrooms, lecture theatres, meeting rooms, laboratories, television and broadcasting studios are modern and fully air-conditioned. A closed-circuit television and radio broadcasting and a satellite transmission system operate on campus.

Computer Laboratory
More than 2,000 personal computers with free internet access are available for use by students

Library
The University's library-cum-information center occupies five stories of a building and has an inventory of some 150,000 books, research studies and hundreds of journals, periodicals, magazines and newspapers in English, Thai and other principal languages.

Self Access Language Learning Center (SALLC)
This supervised computer and media-assisted center provides students with English language self-learning.

Sports and Recreation
The DPU sports complex comprises a gymnasium, a fitness center, a weight room, outdoor tennis courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool and football field.

DPU Place 4-Star Hotel
DPU Place is a 4-star botique hotel on campus with 25 guest rooms providing hands-on training for students studying hospitality and tourism at the University. Run like a commercial hotel, DPU Place offers high-standard and convenient accommodation for outstation visitors to the University. Meals and drinks are served at its air-conditioned cafeteria to non-residents as well as hotel guests.

Printing Services
Photocopying, printing, binding and overhead projector slide production facilities are available at Printing Shops behind Building 5 and in the undercover ground floor area of Building 7. A small charge is made for these services.

Student Affairs
The student affairs office assists students in the attainment of their educational goals. It provides numerous student services and programs to enhance a student in learning, leadership potential and career developments.

Medical Services
DPU provides a free emergency medical service at a clinic on the ground floor of Building 2. It is staffed by a medical doctor and qualified nurses.

Thai Culture
Thai universities play a major role in the country's cultural preservation and development. In 1984, the DPU Cultural Center was built for this purpose and was subsequently adopted by the Ministry of Education as one of its constituent cultural centers. The Center aims to promote values relating to the nation, to religion and the monarchy; to encourage research and study of Thai culture and arts among students, staff and members of the public. Built in traditional Thai architecture, DPU's Cultural Center houses a collection of art and artifacts of cultural and historical significance. The Center also teaches students children from the immediate neighborhood Thai music and the performing arts including Thai dancing, thereby helping them to 'live their culture'.

The Sawai Sudhipitak Museum
The Sawai Sudhipitak Museum , on the 7 th Floor of Building 6, is a tribute to DPU's co-founder and first President, Dr. Sawai Sudhipitak. Born in humble circumstances in 1917, Dr. Sawai rose from school student, to youth leader, government official, politician and confidant of prime ministers. Later he was to go to greater heights as a businessman, writer, translator, teacher, educationalist and internationally acclaimed scholar.

The museum provides a personal and sometimes intimate insight into the life of this extraordinary man, and also into the lifestyle and customs of the Thais with whom he grew up, was educated, and worked.

The galleries of the museum preserve a fine collection of Dr. Sawai's personal possessions, and a fascinating array of memorabilia from the Thailand in which he lived.

Bookshop, Bank, Post Office and Other On-Campus Facilities
A bookshop carrying a wide range of textbooks, dictionaries, magazines, newspapers, diaries, and stationary is located on the ground floor of the car park building, on the western side of campus.

There is a fully operational branch of the Siam Commercial Bank and a Post Office agency in the same location.
Trade and business fairs are regularly held on campus during the week. These offer a wide range of Thai artifacts, household and personal goods, massage and podiatry services, and further varieties of Thai regional foods, snacks, deserts and drinks.

Car Park
Free parking is available for some 500 vehicles in the multi-story car park, which is located on the western perimeter of the campus. Additionally, an outdoor car park is located on the far eastern campus.

Food
Food and beverage are available in the air-conditioned cafe of the University's boutique hotel, DPU Place , as well as in a large food court offering Thai and other delicacies at economical prices.

Thammasat University

Established by the Thammasat University Act in 1933, the university was inaugurated on June 27, 1934 as an open university with the objective of propagating the learning of law and politics to all. The university was then named, 'Thammasat Lae Karn Muang' literally, 'The University of Moral Science and Politics'.
By 1949, there were four major fields of study: Law, Commerce and Accountancy, Political Science and Diplomacy, and Economics. In 1952, the name was changed to Thammasat University. Two years later, the fields of Social Work and Journalism were added. The Institute of Public Administration, offering a postgraduate program, was established in 1955. It was transferred to the National Institute of Development Administration in 1966.
Thammasat University marked a milestone in university education in Thailand by introducing liberal arts education with the founding of the Faculty of Liberal Arts in 1962. Since then, liberal arts education has spread to all universities in Thailand, providing what is called foundation core-courses for all undergraduates. The Faculty of Liberal Arts has grown into several major fields including the following disciplines: Chinese, Drama, English as a Second Language, English Language and Literature, Geography and Natural Science, German, History, Japanese, Library Science, Linguistics, Mathematics, Philosophy, Psychology, Russian, Statistics and Thai. In 1984, the Department of Sociology was upgraded to become the Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology and the Department of Journalism became the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication.
The year 1986 brought several changes to the University. The new campus site at Rangsit was opened to new students. Currently all first year classes are held there. Also newly established and situated on the new campus site is the Faculty of Science and Technology.
In 1991, the Faculty of Medicine was established at the Rangsit Campus. The faculty admits students with bachelor degrees or nearing the completion of bachelor degrees with a minimum of 80 cumulative credits, of which 26 credits are subjects in science and mathematics. The curriculum employs the method of problem-based learning and takes five years to complete.
Presently, Thammasat University has fifteen faculties: Law, Commerce and Accountancy, Political Science, Economics, Journalism and Mass Communication, Liberal Arts, Science and Technology, Social Administration, Sociology and Anthropology, Engineering, Medicine, Allied Health Science, Dentistry, Nursing and Graduate School.
Thammasat University also offers graduate programs leading to master degrees in Accoun ting, Business Administration, Marketing, Economics, Law, History, Library Science, Mass Communication, Political Science, Social Work, Sociology, Anthropology, Thai, Linguistics, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Applied Statistics, Community Development, and English Language and Literature. The Faculty of Economics offers master degree programs both in Thai and in English. The details of the graduate programs are in a separate volume. In 1993, Thammasat began admitting graduates for a doctoral program in Business Administration, a jointventure program between Thammasat University, Chulalongkorn University and the National Institute of Development Administration and financed by CIDA and The Association of Deans of South East Asian Graduate Schools of Management (ADSGM).
Thammasat has four institutes whose responsibilities are predominantly research work. These are the Thai Khadi Research Institute, the Human Resources Institute, the Information Processing Institute for Education and Development, and the Institute of East Asian Studies. Having started out as a law school, Thammasat University has gradually expanded to offer courses in Social Sciences, Humanities and Sciences with the aim of providing higher education in the fields that are pertinent to social need and to promote research and Thai culture.
Several university alumni have been men in prominent positions, such as, Prime Minister, Supreme Court judges, solicitors, government ministers, members of Parliament, members of the Senate, and successful businessmen. In fact, Thammasat University alumni help serve the country in all working areas, at the local, national and international levels.

History

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) is the oldest private non-profit higher education institution offering degrees in Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, Humanities, Science, Communication Arts, Engineering and Law. It is a place where academic theories and business experiences are integrated to produce graduates who can successfully meet today’s business challenges.

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, originally known as the College of Commerce, is the private university that was founded by the Thai Chamber of Commerce in 1940 to provide education for business to Thai youth. After the outbreak of World War II in 1941, the institution was closed and it was reopened in 1963. The two-year curriculum was developed into a standard four-year program in 1964 and on June 17, 1970, the College of Commerce was officially accredited under the Private College Act.

On October 24, 1984, this institution was accredited as a university and the name was changed to the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

International Programs represent the academic expansion of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce in keeping with global business trends.

Vision and Mission

In order to realize our vision of being one of the leading universities in education for business in the Asia, UTCC missions put emphasis on producing graduates with academic and business abilities and ethics, having faculty members, staff and students with distinguished abilities in English, information technology and business, and being the reliable source of academic services in the area of business for the society.

Status and Strength

As of January 2007, UTCC has 19,472 undergraduate and 1,710 graduate students. The total number includes international students from different countries worldwide.
Since its foundation, the University has maintained its close relationship and cooperation with the Thai Chamber of Commerce. Many of our part-time lecturers are successful and outstanding businessmen and executives with invaluable knowledge and experiences.

Background
Bangkok University was officially founded in Bangkok on December 25, 1962 by Mr.Surat and Mrs.Pongtip Osathanugrah. Mr.Surat Osathanugrah is one of Thailand' s most prominent businessmen, a former Deputy Minister of Interior, a former Minister of Commerce and a former member of the House of Representatives, representing Khon Kaen province.

The university was originally known as the Thai Polytechnic Institute until 1965 when it became Bangkok College, the first private college in Thailand. On October 25, 1984, the college was granted university status by the Ministry of University Affairs and has hence been known as Bangkok University.

Bangkok University is a private, non-profit co-educational institution under the patronage of the Bangkok University Foundation. The inspiration for the establishment of this university came from the founders' desire to establish a tertiary educational institution to train students in theoretical and practical experiments, and academic ability.

Bangkok University offers courses both in English and Thai. The Thai program leading to bachelor's degrees is available in Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, Communication Arts, Humanities, Laws, Science majoring in Computer Science, Fine and Applied Arts and Engineering.

The international program, wholely taught in English, is available in Bangkok University International College (BUIC) offering courses in the Schools of Business administration, Communication Arts, Accounting, and Humanities. The international program is well received by those students who want to better their English and prepare themselves for the international business world or for their future studies abroad.

In 1985, Bangkok University's Graduate School began to offer courses toward the MBA Degree. The medium of instruction is English. This graduate program is fully accredited by the Ministry of University Affairs, the only accreditation authority in Thailand. In 1989,the second graduated program in Master of Arts in communication Arts (MACA) was launched. The program is also taught entirely in English and is welcomed by many of those who pursue careers in the world of communication. This has brought about the extension of the program to many other Thais who are not daily users of English, and the Master's Degree in Communication Arts taught in Thai, as a result, started in 1991.

An Alumni Association was officially established on August 26, 1974. The main purpose of the association is to enable former students of this institution to remain in contact with the University and to nurture the friendship of their years at Bangkok University. Several University alumni have become successful business executives, owners of advising agencies, journalists, writers and social workers, all prominent positions that contribute to the development of the nation.

Kasetsart University is a state university of Thailand. Among the present 24 public universities and institutions and 40 private universities and Institutions in the country it ranks fourth chronologically and is the very first one to offer post-secondary degree-bound e ducational programs in agriculture. The three preceding it are also state universities, namely Chulalongkorn, Thammasat, and Mahidol, in that order.


Kasetsart emerged initially in 1938 at the Maejo village in Chiangmai as a unit of division rank of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture with the name of Kasetsart College, literally meaning College of Agricultural Science, and the primary responsibility of offering three-year post-secondary educational programs in response to the personnel requirements of the said ministry. In 1939, it was transferred to the present location at Bangkhen, Bangkok with the inclusion of the School of Forestry in Phrae Under is jurisdiction and the specification of Agriculture, Cooperative Science, and Forestry as the academic areas for its post-secondary education programs.



On 2 February 1943, through the Kasetsart University 2486, the Kasetsart Act B.E. 2486, the Kasetsart College was detached from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Ministry of Agriculture and transformed into a unit equivalent to a department of the said ministry under the name of Kasetsart University (KU) with Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Forestry, Faculty of Cooperative Science, and Faculty of Fisheries as its primary structural units, and the authority to offer post-secondary degree-bound educational programs in Crop Production and Animal Husbandry, Forestry 1943 has been officially designated as the foundation day of Kasetsart University.

In 1946 a duration of five years was officially prescribed for bachelor's degree programs of Kasetsart University and the corresponding courses of study and other academic requirements inclusive of thesis were specified for each of the four programs being offered then. For other universities in the country, the duration for a bachelor's degree program was four years and no thesis was required.

Kasetsart began to offer graduate education in 1954. The first program being offered was the Master of Crop Production and Animal Husbandry program with emphasis on Animal Husbandry.

Campus

Kasetsart University emerged initially as the College of Agricultural offering a 3-year nondegree training program serving the personnel requirements of the Ministry of Agriculture (currently named the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives). Later the College of Agriculture was conferred a state university status on February 2, 1943 with the official name "Kasetsart University" (KU).

Kasetsart University was the first university in Thailand to offer degree programs in agricultural sciences. Such offering was dicated primarily by the country's large demand for well-trained manpower and for the development of agriculture and related fields. According to large increase in the need for degree holders in many other fields in addition to agriculture and related sciences has led Kasetsart University to expand and develop into a full-fledged University. Kasetsart University has organized a National Agricultural fair dealing with agriculture and related fields for more than five decades. Besides improvements in crop varieties, it concentrates on active role in various researches and development projects.
Kasetsart University is one of the oldest universities in Thailand and maintains a high and honorable standard of education. May new campuses have been established to serve and meet the increasing demand for higher education in the country. Up to present, Kasetsart University has expanded to the total of seven campuses throughout the country. They are:

Bangkhen Campus
This is the original and main campus of the university. It is situated on the area measuring 846 rai (135 hectares) in the lower part of the northern zone of Bangkok at the distance of approximately 6 kilometers to the south of Don Muang International Airport. At present, 13 faculties, 2 colleges, 10 offices, 7 institutes and the Graduate School of the university operate at this campus with a total student population of approximately 38,681.The faculties are Agriculture, Agro-Industry, Architecture, Business Administration, Economics, Education, Engineering, Fisheries, Forestry, Humanities, Science, Social Sciences and Veterinary Medicine. The headquarters of all colleges, institutes, centers and offices of the university are also locate in the campus.


Kamphaeng Saen Campus
Kasetsart University, the first Higher Education Institute in Thailand to offer an academically strong program in agriculture, has been established since 1943. It was located in the area belonged to the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives called Kaset Klang Bangkhen or Central Kaset Bangkhen.

In 1965, M.L. Xujati Kambhu, the University President at that time, perceived that the existing area at Bangkhen was not adequate to support the educational expansion according to the National Social and Economics Development Plan. He then searched for a new site. The University Council considered that Kamphaeng Saen District was the most appropriate site for several reasons. Firstly it was only 80 kilometres from Bangkok and 30 kilometres from down town Nakhon Pathom Province. Secondly, the soil was fertile suitable for cultivation. The water can be channeled from the Meaklong River through the irrigation canel dug from the Vajiralongkorn Dam in Kanchanaburi Province. Moreover, big plots of land were available. The Council, then, presented the University master plan to the Cabinet for the purchase and development of land. It was approved on December 6, 1996. Kasetsart University bought altogether 7,841 rai (or 1,270 hectares) of land and the first phase building were constructed in 1974 and finished in 1978.

On November 12, 1979, Kamphaeng Saen Campus started teaching and learning activities by moving the third and fourth year students in faculty of Agriculture and agriculture related programs from Bangkhen to Kamphaeng Saen. From 1990, Kamphaeng Saen Campus could offer classes to students from the first to the fourth year including graduate students.

Sri Racha Campus
This campus occupies the area of 199 rai (32 hectares) in Si Racha District of Chon Buri Province at the distance of approximately 107 kilometers to the east of Bangkok. It was originally an agricultural research station of the university since 1954. Its establishment as a campus took place in 1989 and was dictated by the pressing of the country shortage of high quality manpower as a consequence of the Eastern Seaboard Development Project.
The campus offers degree courses and short-term training programs in three faculties which are Management Sciences, Engineering, and Resources and Environment. The bachelor's degree programs include Business Management, Marketing, Finance, Hotel and Tourism Management, Hotel Studies, International Business, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Computer Science, and Environmental Science. The International Institute of Maritime (IIM) is a new coming office in Si Racha Campus. It is being established and will be finished within 6 years time
The campus also provides special master's degree programs in Business Economics and expects to offer another master's degree program in Agribusiness in the first semester of the academic year 2004.


Chalermphrakiat Sakon Nakhon Province Campus
Chalermphrakiat Sakon Nakhon Province Campus is the fourth campus of Kasetsart University. The campus was established in 1996 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee Anniversary of his Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej's accession to the throne.To mark such significance, His Majesty the King graciously granted permission for the university to include the modifying term "Chalermphrakiat", literally meaning "upholding the honor of His Majesty the King", in the name of the campus. The campus intends to provide much needed development - accelerating academic services and expected to be the center of education for the upper northeastern region of Thailand. Therefore, the campus will meet the needs of the growing region and will support the government's policy of expanding educational opportunities to the distance provinces. The campus aims are for development in management, education, teaching, research and human resources. These aims are in line with Kasetsart University's four primary objectives of learning and teaching, research and development, academic services and extensions, and promotion of traditional arts and cultures.


Lop Buri Campus
This campus occupies an area of 1,876 rai (300.16 hectares) in the Khok Samrong district of the Lop Buri province at a distance of approximately 190 km north of Bangkok. The campus is being founded according to the Cabinet approval on the Educational Opportunities Expansion Project to meet the needs of the people, institutions and organizations of the region and the nation. Services encompass undergraduate and graduate education, basic and applied research and training to the benefit of people. These activities will be done with people participatory perspectives. Degree programs to be offered covering science, technology and social science such as agricultural technology, agro - industry, economics, business administration, study for development, agricultural engineering, environmental management, sustainable tourism science, and wildlife studies. This campus is a national institution with international perspective in that for the global regional cooperation. This campus aims to provide international degree program to the maximum sustainable extent through high quality teaching and research for students of neighbouring countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos PDR.


Suphan Buri Campus
Suphan Buri Campus is situated in the Muang and Bangplama Districts of Suphan Buri Province at a distance of 100 kilometers northwest of Bangkok. The establishment of this new campus will provide opportunities for higher education in an agricultural area and a Center of Excellence for Farmer's Health, strengthening the role of agriculture in Thai economy. The project for its initial development was approved in principle by the Cabinet in 1995 and the corresponding development works have been ongoing since then. Suphan Buri Campus would comprise the following faculties : Allied Health Science, Sports Science, Laws and Human Resource Development. This campus would carry out manpower development programs to supplement its own lecturing staffs and provide a pool of skills for the country and in particular the western region. In addition, it would seek to offer quality and excellence in health related science education. It is intended that the local community will benefit from the establishment of the Suphan Buri Campus by the usage of the university facilities.

Admission of students to the degree-bound educational programs of this campus began in the academic year 1999 by offering master degree program on Sports Science, M.S. (Sports Science). In 2000, the second special master program on Business Administration, M.B.A. has been started. The third degree program was a top-up bachelor degree program on Public Health, B.P.H. which started from March 2001. Recently, the bachelor degree program on Sports Science and Hotel and Tourism Management have been on going and a total of 1,000 students have been enrolled in this campus.

Krabi Campus
Krabi Campus locates in Krabi Province, one of the six provinces along the Andaman seacoast, about 900 kms south of Bangkok. This seventh and the youngest campus of Kasetsart University was established by the request of Southern people who has strongly recognized the roles of Kasetsart University in various disciplines.
During the pioneer period (1997-2002), the campus has completed the feasibility study and the Master Plan. Two ideal sites have been studied, the public land controlled by Krabi Agriculture and Technology College and Tung Kanoon Parn at Talingchan Subdistrict. The first site will be developed into education center as well as the headquarter of the university campus. The second site is aimed in developing into the research station for transferring appropriate technologies on potential cash crop farming, livestock, product development and handicraft center to promote tourism development in the area. Krabi Campus has set up the graduate program on Education Administration while the M.B.A. program is underway.Top up degree program on Sport Sciences has been developed in this campus. Moreover, curriculum of top up degree program in Agricultural Development was completed for future action. Krabi Campus has signed the agreement with UPM (Malaysia) and BAIF (India) so as to promote the regional cooperation. Thai- Nordic Course was operated three times with the cooperation of the Tropical Unit, University of Helsinki. And in this connection, Krabi Campus has also established Andaman Institute to conduct research and development, technology transfer, as well as the establishing the Andaman Youth Leadership Network.
In the second phase (2002-2006), Krabi Campus will develop the infrastructure as well as the information Technology System so as to provide the best opportunity to students in the region. More manpower development program is strengthening as well as the seeking more partnership to be involved in the regional development. The campus will concentrate the research program on education, spot science, natural resource and environment, coastal zone development, rubber, oil palm, fruit orchards, cut flowers, goat production, tourism development, and navigation.

Chulalongkorn University

Chulalongkorn University, Thailand's first institution of higher learning, officially came into being in March, 1917. The groundwork and preparation for it in terms of planning and development, however, took place more than a century ago. The worldwide economic, social and political changes in the late nineteenth century contributed to Siam's decision to adapt herself in order to avoid being colonized by the Western powers (“Siam” became “Thailand” in the year 1939). Thus King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) has royal policy to strengthen and improve government so that the country could successfully resist the tide of colonialism. One of the major parts of the policy, which would later prove to be deep-rooted and highly effective, was to improve the Siamese educational system so as to produce capable personnel to work in both the public and private sectors. As a result, a school was founded in 1871 at the Royal Pages Barrack within the Grand Palace compound.

Later on, in 1882, King Chulalongkorn developed this school and gave it the name of "Suankularb". In the same year, the King also established other schools, namely the Army Cadet School, the Cartographic School, the School for Princes, and the School for Dhamma Studies.

"…All of our subjects, from our royal children down to the lowest commoners, will have the same opportunity to study-be they royals, nobles or commoners…"

This speech showed that the King did not forget common citizens. He had a policy to set up schools throughout the kingdom, together with institutions of higher learning. He insisted : "…Education in this country is the first priority, which I am determined to develop…"
In 1899 Prince Damrong Rajanupab, a younger brother of King Chulalongkorn who was the Minister of Interior at the time, submitted a proposal to found the Civil Service Training School with Phraya Wisutsuriyasak (M.R.Pia Malakul -- who later assumed the title of Chao Phraya Phrasadej Surendradhibodi) as the principal. However, since the students of the school had to work as royal page trainees in their third year of study before graduation, the name of the school was changed to the Royal Pages School in 1902. The Royal Pages School progressed steadily and produced an increasing number of graduates for the government each year. However, King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) saw that the original intention of his father, King Chulalongkorn, was to establish an institution of higher learning. In the beginning, the course of study was focused on government, but as time passed the curriculum should be expanded to include more disciplines so as to meet the expanding needs of the kingdom. Such disciplines included law, international relations, commerce, agriculture, engineering, medicine and teacher education. Thus King Vajiravudh ordered that the Royal Pages School become an institution of higher education and gave it the name the "Civil Service College of King Chulalongkorn" on January 1, 1911.

The Civil Service College received its original funding from the remaining sum of the money which had been contributed by members of the royal family, government officials and ordinary citizens to erect a statue of King Chulalongkorn the Great. After the statue was completed, about eight hundred thousand baht remained in the Royal Treasury Ministry;with interest the sum totalled 982,672 baht . King Vajiravudh gave this sum as the original capital of the college. Furthermore, he graciously donated the palace of his brother, the late Crown Prince Vajirunhis, as the site of the college. He also gave a large plot of land adjacent to the palace in the Patumwan district measuring about 523 acres in area, for its present use and future expansion. Later the Administration Building was constructed as the first building which belonged to the college from the beginning.

After the Civil Service College had been in operation for some time, King Vajiravudh considered that it had achieved a level of readiness. Therefore,he declared that it should become Chulalongkorn University, in honour of King Chulalongkorn,on March 26, 1917. The newly founded university was under the supervision of University Affairs Department, Ministry of Education. Phraya Anukijwithoon was the first principal (the title was changed to Rector in 1935). There was a University Council, which was responsible for policy making, planning, and advising on the affairs of the university. Prince Damrong Rajanupab was the Chairman of the Council and the Principal of the university was the Secretary.
When it was first founded, the university had 380 students taking classes in four faculties which were located in 2 campuses. The Faculty of Medicine was located at Siriraj Hospital, while the Faculties of Public Administration and of Engineering were at the Administration Building and the Faculty of Arts and Science was located at Prince Vajirunhis' palace. The latter three faculties were in Patumwan district. The Law School was under the responsibility of the Ministry of Justice until the university was ready to take over, and the Teachers' Training School was handed over to the Ministry of Education. The categories of students were the same as in the old Civil Service College.

In 1923, the university accepted high school graduates to study in the Faculty of Medicine, which was being supported by the Rockefeller Foundation to organize a Bachelor's Degree program. Five years later the first group of 18 graduates finished their studies, the first to be awarded degrees in the kingdom.
In 1929, the Faculty of Public Administration became the Faculty of Law and Political Science.
In 1933, after the establishment of constitutional monarchy
in 1932, the government transferred this faculty to Thammasat University, which was established in 1934. The result was that Chulalongkorn University had only three faculties during that time.

The development of Chulalongkorn University continued. From 1934 to 1958, the university emphasized improvement of undergraduate education; thus more faculties were established. In 1961 the university set up the Graduate School to be responsible for graduate level education. From 1962 on, the university started to focus on graduate education and began to set up research centers and institutes.
